Metacam 0.5% (meloxicam) solution for injection, 50 ml
Trade name of the drug: Metacam® 5 mg / ml solution for injection (Metacam® 5 mg / ml solution for injection).
International non-proprietary name: meloxicam.
Composition
Metacam® 5 mg / ml solution for injection in 1 ml contains 5 mg of meloxicam as active substance, and as excipients – ethanol, polyethylene glycol, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and water for injections up to 1 ml.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacotherapeutic group: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Meloxicam, which is part of the drug, has pronounced anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity
The mechanism of action of meloxicam is to block the receptors responsible for the production of prostaglandin E, which is involved in the inflammatory process.
The drug penetrates well into the synovial fluid and the site of inflammation. Within 2-3 days of application, the concentration of meloxicam in the serum reaches a constant value. The concentration in synovial fluid is about 70% of the serum concentration. Meloxicam metabolites have no biological activity and are excreted in the faeces (75%) and urine (25%).
Metacam® 5 mg / ml solution for injection according to the degree of impact on the body belongs to moderately dangerous substances (hazard class 3 according to GOST 12.1.007-76), has no allergenic, embryotoxic, teratogenic and mutagenic effects.
Appointment
Metacam is used to treat acute and chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system in dogs, accompanied by severe pain and inflammation (fractures, traumatic arthropathy, sprains and ligaments, osteoarthritis, chronic degenerative joint disease, etc.), as well as to reduce postoperative pain.
The order of application
Metacam® 5 mg / ml solution for injection is used as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic drug:
On the first day – 0.4 ml / 10 kg of live weight
In the following days – 0.2 ml / 10 kg of live weight
At the beginning of therapy or as a single injection to eliminate acute and postoperative pain. Use for long-term treatment once a day for several days and, if necessary, up to 22 months.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose with the drug have not been established.
Features of action
Peculiarities of action at the beginning of the drug Metacam® 5 mg / ml solution for injection and its cancellation were not detected.
When using the drug Metacam® 5 mg / ml solution for injection in animals at the injection site may form a swelling that passes spontaneously.
Contraindication
The use of Metacam® 5 mg / ml solution for injection in animals with liver, cardiovascular, renal and hemorrhagic disorders, in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance is prohibited.
Features of application

Side effects
The most common and dangerous side effects of NSAIDs are lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, which are manifested by dyspepsia, gastric erosions, peptic ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding. Two types of cyclooxygenases that inhibit NSAIDs were identified in the 1990s. The first enzyme, COX-1, is present in most tissues (in the endothelium of the stomach, kidneys, 1 platelets) and controls the production of prostaglandins with protective functions. The second, COX-2, is involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins, mediators of inflammation. COX-2 under normal conditions is absent and is formed during inflammatory reactions. Therefore, the anti-inflammatory effect of NSAIDs is due to the suppression of COX-2, and adverse reactions – the suppression of COX-1.
The ratio of NSAID activity in terms of blocking COX-2 and COX-1 allows us to judge their potential toxicity. The more intense the degree of inflammatory process, the more picky the action of Metacam on COX-1 and COX-2 and, accordingly, less toxic its effects on the body.
