Pharmacological properties
ATC vet classification code QP52A - Anthelmintics. QP52AA51 praziquantel, combinations.
Brovanol-Z is a combined antiparasitic agent that contains praziquantel and pyrantel pamoate, which together provide a wide range of anthelmintic action on all phases of development of round and tapeworms that parasitize dogs and cats, including Toxocara canis, Toxocara mistax, Toxascaris leonina, Uncinaria spp., Trichuris vulpis, Ancylostoma spp., Echinococcus granulosus, Alveococus multilocularis, Mesocestoides lineatus, Dipylidium caninum, Diphyllobothrium latum, multiceps multiceps, Taenia spp.
Praziquantel is a synthetic compound, a quinoline derivative. Its mechanism of action is caused by the violation of the permeability of the cell membranes of helminths for calcium ions, which leads to rapid paralysis of parasites and the destruction of their cell membranes, as well as inhibition of glucose metabolism. This leads to the death of parasites and their removal from the gastrointestinal tract. Praziquantel is well absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and reaches the maximum concentration in blood plasma after 1-3 hours. Bioavailability is about 80%. It is distributed in the organs and tissues of animals and binds to blood proteins (70-80%). It is metabolized in the liver with the formation of inactive metabolites. It is excreted from the body with urine and, in a small amount, with feces. The half-life lasts about 1.5 hours.
Pyrantel pamoate is a tetrahydropyrimidine derivative active against sexually mature and immature nematodes. It blocks the transmission of nerve impulses in neuromuscular synapses by depolarizing muscle cell membranes, thereby causing paralysis of the nematode's muscular system. Pyrantel pamoate is almost not absorbed from the intestines, and due to this, its anthelmintic effect is prolonged. It is excreted from the body mainly unchanged (93%) with feces.
Application
Prevention and treatment of dogs and cats from the age of three weeks with nematodes (toxocarosis, toxascariasis, uncinariasis, trichocephalosis, hookworm), cestodes (taenia, dipylidiasis, echinococcosis, diphyllobotriosis, mesocestoidosis) and mixed nematodes and cestodes invasions.
Dosage
The drug is applied to animals individually, added once to the morning feeding with a small amount of feed or injected forcibly on the root of the tongue with the help of a measuring cup or syringe without a needle in a dose of 1 ml per 3 kg, and for small animals 14-15 drops (0.33 ml) per 1 kg of body weight. The suspension must be shaken before use.
It does not require a fasting diet and the use of laxatives.
With strong invasiveness, deworming is recommended to be repeated after 10 days.
Preventive deworming is carried out quarterly, as well as 12-14 days before vaccination.
Contraindication
Increased sensitivity to the components of the drug.
Do not use in females in the first half of pregnancy and within two weeks after giving birth, puppies and kittens up to three weeks of age, exhausted and sick with infectious diseases of animals.
Do not use simultaneously with piperazine and drugs that inhibit cholinesterase.
Reservation
Use the drug according to the leaflet. In some animals, with a strong infestation, complications are possible due to intoxication (digestion of dead helminths): urticaria and itching in the area of the rectum, anxiety, diarrhea, less often vomiting. These symptoms disappear quickly without additional intervention.
